Rising from salvaged timber beams, Barn Again sits at Gammel Strand in Copenhagen as part of the inaugural Copenhagen Architecture Biennial. Created in collaboration with architect Tom Svilans, the pavilion responds to the festival theme of “Slow Down” by inviting visitors to pause, gather, and reflect within its sheltered interior.
The structure is built entirely from reclaimed wood sourced from disused Norwegian barns. Each beam carries its own history: weathered surfaces, old joinery, and connection details remain visible, layered with new incisions and precise joints to usher the timber into its next life. Stacked and tapering towards a pointed form, the pavilion balances openness and intimacy, with sheltered seating and a kiosk for events throughout the Biennale.
The pavilion was built on site in just four days by Tom and our studio, working closely with Morten and his team at Winthers A/S to bring the design to life.
Atmosphere was central to the design. Suspended censers, designed by EJM, infuse the space with a bespoke scent developed in collaboration with B Corp skincare brand Formerly Known As Haeckels, creating a calm and meditative environment.
Working with Bollinger+Grohmann and Winther A/S, we developed the pavilion as a fully demountable structure, extending the timber’s lifespan well beyond the Biennale. Both reflective and communal, Barn Again embodies slowness not only in its material reuse and craft, but also in the way it occupies the city—a space to dwell, to connect, and to take time.
