The Containers at Ten87 unfolds as a new chapter in Ten87’s evolving creative ecosystem on Markfield Road, a site already home to one of London’s most vibrant independent recording studio communities. Founded in 2014 in response to the need for long-term, affordable creative space, Ten87 has grown into a home for a diverse community of artists, producers, and engineers, where collaboration, craft, and shared knowledge are central to everyday practice.

The Containers introduces a cluster of 12 affordable, acoustically tuned recording studios, crafted from repurposed shipping containers and configured to extend Ten87’s ethos of inclusive creative infrastructure. Embedded within the Markfield Road site, the project reworks an industrial typology through principles of reuse and adaptability, transforming container structures into high-performance environments for music production.

Sustainability is integral to the project’s conception. Through material reuse, low-impact construction strategies, and an ambition to achieve an exemplary BREEAM rating, The Containers positions environmental responsibility alongside creative output. The architecture prioritises longevity, treating the containers not as temporary objects but as a durable framework for continued occupation and evolution.

As part of the wider Ten87 campus, The Containers operates as both expansion and reinforcement: a resilient piece of cultural infrastructure that supports making, experimentation, and the collective life of music within the city.
